When I was a little girl, if you told me I would grow up to love exercising, I would not have believed you.
If you told me that God would give me a ministry to come alongside people to move at their pace and to feel comfortable in their own skin, I really would not have believed you.
Now as a certified personal trainer, I have the privilege of coming alongside others in their journey to focus on what they can do, rather than focusing on their limitations and what they cannot do.
At an early age, I starting using food as a way to escape. It was a source of comfort and a (misguided) solution to deal with painful situations.
I was self-conscious about my body which led me to gradually withdraw from so many aspects of my life… including movement. By the time I was in high school, I was about 30-40 pounds overweight (depending on what diet I was trying), and I avoided physical activity at all costs.
Flannery O’Connor said in order for the reading of great literature to ever become a pleasure, it often starts as a discipline.
Exercise was like that for me. I didn’t enjoy exercise while I was doing it, but I loved how I felt afterward. It gave me a taste of feeling strong… and it felt so good!
Over time, I stopped focusing on the awkwardness of my body, my lack of athletic skill and my insecurities. Instead, I began to experience the blessing of movement and exercise, and how good it feels to work, sweat, and to see progress and get stronger.
I’m so grateful God moves mountains, makes blind eyes see, and that His Holy Spirit works in us to mold and shape us into who He calls us to be. God does indeed give beauty for ashes!
If you need an outlet to move during this stressful time, I’d love to support you!
